Black Zombie
BEFORE HOLLYWOOD, THERE WAS HAITI.
Beneath the blood-soaked spectacle of modern horror lies the untold story of the zombie’s buried origins. Part cultural reckoning, part horror remix, this documentary traces the evolution of the zombie from colonial Haiti to contemporary Hollywood, revealing how a figure born from enslavement, spiritual belief and resistance was transformed into one of pop culture’s most profitable monsters.
From "White Zombie" to "Night of the Living Dead" and beyond, Maya Annik Bedward uncovers the history Hollywood left behind, bringing together Haitian cultural historians and spiritual leaders with horror icons Tom Savini, Tananarive Due and Slash, who also serves as executive producer. Following its SXSW world premiere, the film won Fantasia’s Northern Excellence Award and earned a New York Times Critic’s Pick.
