Selected for Letterboxd Video Store by guest curator Richard Linklater
A small-time criminal on the run drifts through Paris with a young American woman, killing time, dodging the law, and testing the limits of freedom as both romance and danger close in.
There was cinema before Breathless, and cinema after it. Premiering in 1960, Breathless detonated the conventions of narrative filmmaking and helped usher in the French New Wave almost overnight. Drawing from American crime films while tearing their formula apart, it helped ignite the French New Wave and influenced generations of filmmakers across the globe. Now presented in a new 4K restoration, its raw energy and irreverent style feel as alive as ever.
In French with English subtitles available.
