Mārama
Selected for Video Store by Letterboxd member Kit Lazer, @MoviesRTherapy.
A MĀORI GOTHIC STORY OF RETRIBUTION.
1859. When a young Māori woman is summoned from New Zealand to North Yorkshire, she uncovers her horrific colonial heritage and is compelled to confront and destroy the titled Englishman who devastated her family.
Hailing from Letterboxd’s home country of New Zealand, Taratoa Stappard’s “Mārama” is an assured first feature from the filmmaker, which immediately put it’s stamp on the fall festival circuit last year when it premiered at TIFF, with a Fantastic Fest showing soon after. A film that, in curator Kit Lazer's words, "hasn't left my mind since I first saw it at a festival nine months ago."
Languages: English, te reo Māori and French. English subtitles available.
