The Currents
SOMETHING PULLED HER IN. SOMETHING ELSE KEPT HER UNDER.
At the height of her career, Argentinian fashion designer Lina is seized by the sudden urge to plunge into an icy winter lake after accepting an award in Switzerland. Back in Buenos Aires, she tells no one of the incident. Left with a paralyzing fear of water, something in her has shifted — quiet and invisible, slowly unravelling a past she thought she had left behind.
From Milagros Mumenthaler, whose debut feature won the Golden Leopard at Locarno, "The Currents" premiered in the Platform section at TIFF. A psychological study of a woman in quiet crisis, told through atmosphere and implication rather than explanation — the kind of film that moves like the thing it is named after, pulling you somewhere before you've noticed you've moved.
