The Vanishing
WHO HAS SEEN THIS WOMAN?
Rex and Saskia, a young couple deeply in love, are on holiday when they stop at a busy service station. Saskia vanishes in broad daylight, and three years pass with no answers or closure surrounding her disappearance. Just as Rex begins to lose hope, he starts receiving mysterious letters from her abductor. An unorthodox love story and a deeply unsettling psychological thriller, "The Vanishing" unfolds with meticulous intensity towards an unforgettable finale.
Originally released as "Spoorloos" (Dutch for "without trace"), George Sluizer's "The Vanishing" has earned a reputation as one of cinema's most disturbing psychological thrillers. Stanley Kubrick reportedly considered it the scariest film he'd ever seen, while filmmaker and Letterboxd member Mike Flanagan describes it as a film that “gets under the skin and sticks with you.” At the time of its launch on Letterboxd Video Store, this Dutch cult classic ranks #47 in Letterboxd’s Official Top 250 Horror Films. It explores the all-consuming nature of obsession and the terrifying pull of unanswered questions, building towards a conclusion that has haunted generations of film lovers. Sluizer later remade the film for American audiences with Sandra Bullock, Kiefer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges, but it's his 1988 original that remains the essential watch.
